The Firebird Suite (2019)

This was one of my first big projects in my second year at UCA Farnham, it was all about playing with images so the first couple of pages in this project start off so small and then eventually grow bigger and bigger until the entire page is covered. It reminded me of classical music, particularly classical so music became the main focus throughout. I used the sound of the Firebird Suite symphony to serve as inspiration for the pictures, depicting this surreal war between orange musical notes by the skinny conductor and blue musical notes by the stout conductor. Each of the bigger pagesi I sketched out three pages during the night, which took about 6 hours total and then the next morning, 5 additional hours inking and colouring. It was exhaustive as I had to meet a deadline and these pages were so packed with detail trying to make them look like instruments but with that surreal edge, t was a nightmare, but the end result was something I was very proud of. Never before did I do a project on that scale before and it's what motivated me to continue going down a book illustrator career.
